What is a Master Plan?

A Master Plan is a long-range vision for the future of the community. It provides a framework for making big-picture decisions and can promote and strengthen valued community assets as well as encourage new partnerships and opportunities. A Master Plan is the guide for the future and helps the Village set policies and make decisions involving how land is used. The rules for development are based on the Master Plan and written in the Zoning Ordinance.

The Planning Process

The Planning Commission will lead an extensive study of community preferences, best practices, and existing conditions to establish a long-term vision for development. Together, this information will culminate in a framework for implementation. The plan will include goals and objectives, with corresponding recommendations for future land use changes and specific action items.

The public input needed to understand community preferences is critically important to the success of this plan. The process will be dynamic and engaging, with the intention of encouraging broad participation.

Throughout the Planning Process, the following engagement activities will be offered:
(Public engagement activities will be open for participation this winter!)

Public Input Survey: An online survey with questions to garner a better understanding of community preferences for land use, growth, and change in Milford. The survey closed on February 7, 2024, but key themes and a summary of responses is available on the Public Input page.

Interactive Virtual Engagement: In addition to a conventional survey, this planning process includes interactive virtual engagement activities, such as mapping and budgeting, in order to generate versatile and intentional feedback.

Meeting Toolkits: Pre-assembled toolkits with information and resources to allow community organizations and local leaders host their own group discussions. The meeting toolkits swill include directions for how to facilitate the meetings and submit the results back to the Village.

Public Open House: The public will be invited to attend an open house to review initial findings and offer additional input. The public open house will be comprised of several activities that will generate feedback on the various focus areas of the Plan.

Virtual Open House: In conjunction with the Public Open House, we will offer opportunities for virtual participation for a brief period following the in-person event. The virtual activities will review the same information as the public open house, and offer a convenient alternative for those unable to attend.
